Background to the Study
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) plays a vital role in the development of any nation. It has been an instrument for achieving social, economic, educational, scientific and technological development (Adedeji, 2010). ICT has greatly influenced the educational sector especially on teaching, learning and research. The application of Information Communication Technology (ICT) is not only emphasised in corporative business and the industrial sector, but it is an essential part of education at all levels (Allen, 2011).
Information and Communication Technology (ICT), including computers, is generally believed to foster cooperative learning, provide more information and, through simulation, make complex learning experiences easier to understand. Therefore, the use of ICT cannot be ignored either by teachers or by students. This sentiment is stressed by Westhuizen (2014) who points out that, in relation to the use of ICT for learning, technology holds a promise of improved access to information and increased interactivity and communication between teachers and their students.
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) encompasses the effective use of equipment and programmes to access, retrieve, convert, store, organize, manipulate and present data and information to student during classes (Gay & Blads, 2015). E learning, which is described as the use of ICT to enhance or support teaching and learning in education, has become increasingly important in both secondary schools and tertiary education (Adedeji, 2010). Information can be seen as “idea” conceived in the human mind, while communication is the transfer of that information from the original source to the destination where it is needed with the intention to producing a change in behaviour of the receiver (NCET, 2015; Adekomi, 2010).
When information and communication drifts away from the orthodox verbal and print media towards the more recent electronic media then the concept is known as ICT. This is why Badru (2012) defines “ICT” as the science and activity of processing, storing and sending information by using computers. She further defined Communication Technology as the use of hardware and software to enhance communication. In other words, there is an overlap between the function of Information Technology and Communication Technology. According to Badru (2012) the teaching-learning process is inevitably involved in information passage from the teacher (sender) to the learner (receiver) and vice versa on a regular basis. This has necessitated this study into investigating the perception of secondary school science teachers on the use of information communication and technology(ICT) for instruction in Anambra state.
Statement of the Problem
It has been discovered in recent years that Information Communication Technology(ICT) is being canvassed by several people as being effective in improving teaching and learning(Fabunmi &Francis,2012). In the present information age, the issue of teacher’ use of ICT is of crucial importance. This is so because the use of ICT by teacher would enhance competence and confidence in them. However, many teachers still patronize traditional book materials as a source of information in our universities rather than ICT that is more efficient and reliable. Despite the importance of ICTs in every aspect of human life including education and national development, many academic teachers in secondary schools do not seem to appreciate this importance and as such appear not to use them in teaching and learning process of science. It against this backdrops that has necessitated the study into investigating the perception of secondary school science teachers on the use of information communication and technology(ICT) for communication.
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of the study is to investigate the perception of secondary school science teachers on the use of ICT for instruction in Anambra state. Specifically, the study will ascertain the:
- Perception of teachers on the use of the ICT in the teaching of sciences.
- Perception of male and female teachers on their use of ICT in teaching science subjects in secondary school.
- Impact of using ICT in the teaching of sciences on secondary school student.
- Perceived problems of using ICT for instruction by secondary school science teachers.
Significance of the Study
The study will benefit science teachers, school administrators in secondary school, students and future researchers.
Science teacher/ school administrators will benefit from the study as it will enable them see the influence ICT use in teaching science have on the effective teaching and learning of science. It will make school administrator to provide ICT facilities for the teaching and learning of sciences.
Student will benefit from the study as they will fully understand that the use of ICT in the teaching of sciences can enhance their learning ability.
Future researchers will benefit from the study as the findings of the study will serve as source research material for related studies.
Scope of the Study
The study covers the perception of secondary school teachers on the use of information communication and technology (ICT) for instruction in Anambra state. The scope is delimited to Awka South L.G.A and covers how gender of teacher influences their use of ICT in teaching science subjects in secondary school, perception of teachers on the use of ICT in the teaching of sciences, the impact of the use of ICT in the teaching of sciences in secondary school and the problems of using ICT in the teaching and learning of science subjects in secondary schools.
The following research questions were posed to guide the study:
- What is the perception of teachers on the use of ICT in the teaching of sciences subjects in secondary schools?
- To what extent does gender of teacher influences their use of ICT in teaching science subjects in secondary school?
- What impact do the use of ICT have on secondary school students in the teaching of sciences?.
- What are the problems militating against the use of ICT in teaching and learning of sciences on secondary school?
